10th Concert Season

JOHN ALLRED
Friday October 12, 2007
8:00 PM
I was first introduced to John Allred by Warren Vache Jr. who said to me that John was the finest jazz trombonist he had ever had the pleasure to work with. Since then, Harry Allen, who wowed audiences here two years ago also recommended John Allred as the finest trombonist around. With a lead-in like that, how could we NOT bring this great performer to the Arts Guild!!!

John Allred jazz instrumentalist is active in jazz club and concert appearances worldwide. When John isn’t playing with his own quintet, he can be seen playing trombone and tuba with Harry Connick JR’s big band. John has performed and recorded with some of the world’s jazz greats including Clark Terry, Rich Matteson, Ruby Braff, Al Cohn, Slide Hampton, Bobby Shew, Jake Hanna, Bucky Pizzarelli, Scott Hamilton, Ralph Sutton, Ross Tompkins and Dick Hyman to name just a few.

Since his arrival in New York City, John has worked with the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, Toshiko Akioshi’s Big Band, Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks, and the Louis Armstrong Centennial band. John has also performed on Broadway in the musical “Thou Shalt Not” with whom he has toured and last year played for Broadway’s “Pajama Game” with Harry Connick Jr.

You may have seen Jerry Vivino on the Conan O’Brian Show performing as part of the band. He has assembled a great group to play at the Arts Guild:JerryVivino:Sax, flute, vocals, Kermit Driscoll: Upright Bass, Glen Alexander on guitar,Ray Monte/drums.

Music and art was an everyday thing in the Vivino household during Jerry’s childhood and throughout his adolescence. Influenced by both his parents, Jerry couldn’t help but to be exposed to the likes of Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis and Charlie Parker as well as Count Basie, Dinah Washington, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald.

If you don’t know Jerry personally, you certainly have heard him play. Featured on countless recordings, TV commercials and movie soundtracks, his resume reads like a Who’s Who in Entertainment. Jerry has played with Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Paul Shaffer, Frankie Valli, Al Kooper, Dion, James Brown, Phoebe Snow, Donald Fagen, Dr. John, Bradford Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis and the legendary Keely Smith.

Jerry’s true passion in music is Jazz and R&B. In addition to being a member of the Max Weinberg 7, he can be heard playing with his brother Jimmy in the Vivion Brothers Band. He is also the leader of a really fun group with bass player Mike Merritt, drummer James Wormworth, keyboard player Brian Charrette and frequent guests, trumpet player Lew Soloff and guitarist Melvin Sparks.

STEIN BROTHERS
Friday April 11, 2008
8:00 PM
Although well known and with a following in the Greater Newark (New Jersey) Area, as North New Jersey natives, Asher (alto sax) and Alex (tenor sax) are still in their early twenties. They started their careers by playing in the late lamented Tuesday jam session at the old Peppermint Lounge in Orange, and have appeared in such venues as New Jersey PAC (Performing Arts Center- including the "Absolut Sounds of the City " Summer Festival), Kavehaz (Manhattan), the Carlyle Hotel (Manhattan), the South Orange "Giants of Jazz", Cecil's Place (West Orange), Shanghai Jazz (Madison), the Crossroads (Garwood), Trumpet's (Montclair), Bula (Newton) and the Priory's (Newark) Friday night Jazz Series.

Both men were awarded Burch Fellowships to study jazz- Asher studied Latin and Caribbean Music in Cuba in 2003 and Alex studied with top musicians and grammy award winning arranger Slide Hampton during the summer of 2002. Alex and Asher are leaders of their own quintet, are members of the Bud Powell Tribute Sextet and frequently appear as members of the T.S. Monk Sextet.

The Star Ledger newspaper in 2001 named Asher the youngest on its list of the 20 most promising jazz musicians in the State under forty, describing him as a "fearless improviser." Members of the Stein Brothers Quintet also include Harlem's Mferghu on piano, Brooklyn's Doug Largent and Ruslan Khain on bass and New Brunswick’s Chris Brown on drums.

HOWARD ALDEN
Friday May 9, 2008
8:00 PM
“He may be the best of his generation,” writes Owen Cordle in Jazz Times. George Kanzler of the Newark Star Ledger proclaims that he is “the most impressive and creative member of a new generation of jazz guitarists.” And Chip Deffaa of the New York Post observes that he is “…one of the very finest young guitarists working today.”

Upon moving to New York City in 1982, Alden’s skills, both soloist and accompanist, were quickly recognized and sought-out for appearances and recordings with such artists as Joe Bushkin, Ruby Braff, Joe Williams, Warren Vache and Woody Herman.

He has continued to win accolades from critics and musicians alike, adding Benny Carter, Flip Phillips, Mel Powell, Bud Freeman, Kenny Davern, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie and George Van Eps, as well as notable contemporaries such as Scott Hamilton and Ken Peplowski to his list of impressive credits. Howard Alden has been a Concord Jazz recording artist since the late 80s where his prolific recorded output as leader, co-leader, and versatile sideman, has captured an artist of consistently astonishing virtuosity and originality.

Howard can be heard on the soundtrack to the 1999 Woody Allen movie “Sweet and Lowdown”, starring Sean Penn, who was also nominated for an Academy Award for his role as a legendary jazz guitarist in the 30s. Howard not only played all the guitar solos, but also coached Mr. Penn on playing the guitar for his role in the film. The London Observer has this to say about Alden’s new solo CD, My Shinning Hour; “If there is such a thing as a complete jazz guitarist, then Alden is it. Only a real virtuoso can sustain a whole CD of solo guitar with the aplomb he displays here.” In 2004 Howard was the guitarist chosen for an all-star line-up commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival, touring 50 cities of the United States in addition to their appearance at the Newport Festival.

Howard Alden was voted “Best Emerging Talent-Guitar” in the first annual Jazz Times critics’ poll in 1990, and “Talent Deserving Wider Recognition” in the 1992, 1993, 1995, and 1996 Downbeat critics’ poll.
